He went on to study theory, composition, piano and organ at the local conservatory, after which he played for two years in the Linz (Austria) opera house. He returned to Prague to become principal bassoon in several symphony orchestras, and was the teacher of bassoon at the Prague Conservatory from 1885 to 1894, retiring for health
